How Do I Know if I Have a Warranty on My Furnace?
Before you can find out if your furnace has a warranty still in effect, you need to know the brand and serial number of your furnace. Once you know the answers to these questions, you can begin the process of identifying if your warranty is current and what it covers.
Locating the Model and Serial Number
Furnaces typically have their model and serial number in an easy, accessible place. Check the inside top section of the furnace. The information you need should be located on the sidewall on a sticker or plate. If your furnace is a down flow unit, the information might be located in the lower compartment instead of the top part.
Finding Warranty Information
Furnaces have their own warranty completely different from an air conditioner, heat pump, or other HVAC equipment. If you have access to the owner’s manual, you should be able to find details about your warranty coverage. If you don’t have the manual, there is still a way to find out what your coverage is and how long you have it for.
Once you have the model and serial number of your unit, you can perform an online search for your furnace. This will at least provide you with your warranty coverage and terms but won’t tell you if the warranty is still valid. Unless you had the unit installed yourself and know when the warranty started, you won’t know your warranty’s validity.
If you inherited your furnace after purchasing a home, the details on when the furnace was installed might be in your paperwork from buying your current home. If you don’t have anything telling you when the purchase date was, you should call your local HVAC company to have them verify your unit’s warranty terms and coverage.
Transferring Your Warranty
When you buy a new home, the warranty should be transferred from the old owners to the new owners. Transferring the warranty does cost when a home is sold. Unfortunately, most people are unaware this should be done, and so some warranties aren’t transferred when the new owners take possession of the home.
If you recently purchased a home or in the process of buying, you should double check that the warranty for your furnace and any other heating and cooling equipment is transferred correctly. This protects you in the future in case expensive repairs are necessary.
