Mini split air conditioning systems, also known as ductless mini splits
, provide cooling for areas without duct work. They are a cost-effective alternative to central air conditioning systems that are appropriate for a number of applications
. Ductless mini splits are becoming a popular option for homeowners searching for flexibility and efficiency.
Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioning Components
A mini split air conditioning system has the same components as a central air conditioning system, except for the duct work. An exterior component houses the system’s condenser coil and compressor. The interior unit houses the evaporator coil and fan. Copper tubing joins the two components, pumping refrigerant between them.
There are various configurations of mini split components available to meet the cooling needs of the interior of the home as well as any space restrictions. Components include:
- Interior wall units
- Interior ceiling cassettes
- Single zone condensers
- Multi-zone condensers
- Heat pumps
How Mini Split Air Conditioning Works
Ductless mini split air conditioning systems work the same as central air conditioning systems, only without the duct work and other components which distribute cooled air throughout the home. The exterior compressor pumps refrigerant through the copper lines connected to the interior unit. Air is drawn across the interior evaporator coils where it is cooled. The fan distributes the cool air throughout the room.
Installing a Mini Split Air Conditioner
A professional HVAC contractor
can provide quality, reliable installation for mini split air conditioning systems. The exterior condensing unit is installed outside the home with the appropriate clearance to maintain proper air flow. The interior components are mounted on the wall or ceiling of the indoor space. A 3-inch hole behind the interior unit is drilled through to the exterior of the wall in order to connect the interior and exterior components. The copper refrigerant lines and their insulation pass through this hole, connecting the components. Electrical connections and a drain pipe are also installed.
