Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioning Components

How Mini Split Air Conditioning Works
Ductless mini split air conditioning systems work the same as central air conditioning systems, only without the duct work and other components which distribute cooled air throughout the home. The exterior compressor pumps refrigerant through the copper lines connected to the interior unit. Air is drawn across the interior evaporator coils where it is cooled. The fan distributes the cool air throughout the room.
Installing a Mini Split Air Conditioner

The exterior condensing unit is installed outside the home with the appropriate clearance to maintain proper air flow. The interior components are mounted on the wall or ceiling of the indoor space. A 3-inch hole behind the interior unit is drilled through to the exterior of the wall in order to connect the interior and exterior components. The copper refrigerant lines and their insulation pass through this hole, connecting the components. Electrical connections and a drain pipe are also installed.
