What to Check for Before Calling the AC Repair Person

You find yourself sitting around the house one summer afternoon and think to yourself, “It’s really toasty in here!” You go to turn down the thermostat and you find that it is already set at the desired temperature. Before you go to make the dreaded AC repair call, here are some things you can check that could be causing the problem.

  1. Electricity- Crazy as it may sound, many people do not realize that if the power is out, the air conditioning is out as well. You do not want to spend the money on an AC repair call because of this overlooked detail. You would be surprised how often we have heard this happen! Be patient and usually the air conditioner will turn back on when the power comes back on.                                                                                                                                    what to check before calling the ac person 1
  2. Air Filter- Regular changing of the air filter is necessary in order for the air conditioning unit to run properly. Depending on the air filter, you should change it every 1 – 6 months. If the filter has not been changed in a while and appears dirty, it should be changed immediately. This solution solves many air conditioning issues. 4. Disconnect Switch-This will usually be located outside of your home near the air conditioner. It looks like a small metal electrical breaker or fuse box. The purpose of the disconnect is to allow a professional a way to disconnect the system while performing maintenance on the air conditioning unit. Sometimes, the switch on the disconnect could have become unplugged or been flipped off by something bumping into it or a blown fuse. Try turning it back on if this is the case. Be careful in doing so, as this switch brings 240 volts of electricity to the A/C unit and can cause serious injury and worse if not handled properly.
  5. Drain Line- There are many systems that have a water safety switch that stops operation if water starts to leak. If there is water in a pan under the unit, the drain may be clogged. All that needs to be done is emptying the pan and flushing out the drain line. This may get your system back up and running.
  6. Thermostat- Occasionally, the batteries in the thermostat need to be replaced. If the thermostat is off, try changing them. You would be surprised how often this happens!                                                                                                                                                                                       what to check before calling the ac person 2
