How To Tell If Your HVAC System Needs To Be Replaced
Knowing when to replace your HVAC system can be a difficult decision. Can it make it another year? Will maintenance fix the problem? What if I can’t afford it?
If you are unsure about whether or not your system needs replacement, check out these common red flags that indicate it may be time to update your system. If your system is experiencing one or any of these problems, contact the professionals at HVAC.com for help finding a technician to assess your HVAC system.
Age is more than just a number. The age of your system is one of the most important factors when determining whether to repair or replace your system. If your heat pump or AC unit is more than ten years old or your furnace is more than 15 years old, it’s time to consider a replacement.
Use your ears. Unusual noises are often a sign of the need for repairs, but they can also be indicators of a bigger problem. Noises like popping, banging, humming, screeching, grinding, grating or squealing should be assessed immediately. If the parts causing the noise cost more than half of the price of a new unit, it’s worth investing in a new unit.
Use your nose. Strange odors are often a sign of a malfunctioning HVAC system. In some cases, the smells can signify big problems for your HVAC system. If you are experiencing a burning smell, it may mean faulty wiring or burning wire insulation. Odors can indicate real problems for your home so don’t get used to them, get them checked out.
Reference your energy bills. If you have been experiencing higher than normal energy bills or costlier and costlier HVAC system repairs, take that as a sign that it is time to have your HVAC system replaced. These types of increases are normal as systems get older, but significant increases suggest that you will save more money by replacing an inefficient system with a new, more efficient system.
Understand your home. Your home can give you the indicators you need to know when it’s time to replace your HVAC system. If you are breathing dusty air, struggling with air that is too humid in the summer or too dry in the winter, see soot around the registers or feel different temperatures in each of your rooms, it’s time to have your system assessed…it might need replacement.
