Troubleshooting AC Problems: Signs Your System May Be Having Issues
Air conditioning is a lifeline during scorching summers, but what happens when your AC starts acting up? Recognizing the signs of trouble early can save you from a sweltering situation. Here are some common AC problems to watch out for:
Complete System Shutdown
If your AC suddenly stops working altogether, it could signal a major component failure, such as a malfunctioning compressor or a blown capacitor. However, before panicking, check if the thermostat is set correctly or if there’s an electrical issue causing the disconnect.
Inadequate Cooling
If you set the thermostat to a cool 70 degrees, but the indoors feel more like a tepid 75, it could indicate airflow issues due to a dirty HVAC filter or, more seriously, a refrigerant leak that’s reducing the system’s cooling capacity. While you can easily replace an HVAC filter, only a qualified HVAC contractor should recharge refrigerant due to the potential dangers of handling it.
Uneven Cooling Throughout the Home
Do you notice temperature swings from room to room? Maybe your downstairs is cool and comfortable, and your upstairs bedroom feels like a sauna. This discrepancy often indicates ductwork issues, such as leaks, damage, or inadequate design. Uneven cooling may also stem from improperly designed ductwork. An HVAC contractor can inspect the condition of your ductwork and make the appropriate adjustments or repairs.
An incorrectly sized HVAC system that is too large or too small for the space it’s intended to cool can also result in uneven temperatures, as it may cycle on and off irregularly or struggle to adequately cool certain areas.
Water Leaks
Discovering puddles around your indoor unit is never a good sign. It typically indicates a clogged condensate drain line or, worse, a frozen evaporator coil due to restricted airflow or low refrigerant levels. AC water leaks should be fixed as soon as possible to prevent damage to your system and home, as well as to prevent mold growth.
Unusual Noises
Grinding, hissing, or any other unusual noises could signify a mechanical issue that needs immediate attention. Besides the humming sound of your AC unit running a cycle, they operate relatively quietly.
“Acquaint yourself with what your system should sound like when it’s running normally,” said Josh Elliott, the HVAC training technician at Indianapolis, IN-based Williams Comfort Air. “If it starts making strange noises, you know there is a problem.”
What to Do If You Notice These AC Symptoms
If you notice any of these AC problems, turn the system off completely and contact a reputable HVAC company so they can troubleshoot the issue, make the appropriate repair, and restore your cooling system to peak performance.
“If you notice any of these signs, don’t ignore them,” Elliott said. “The problem is only going to get worse.”
Remember, regular AC maintenance can prevent many of these issues from arising in the first place. Schedule annual check-ups with your HVAC technician each spring to keep your AC running efficiently throughout the year.
