Need a fix for your Goodman air handler? Our tips below should give you some ideas on what to check before calling a repair technician. Save yourself time and money by giving these Goodman air handler troubleshooting tasks a try.

Goodman air handler is not turning on

Make sure there is power to the air handler. Check your circuit breaker or fuse box. Switch the circuit back on or replace the fuse if necessary.

Your air handler has a reset button (check the owner’s manual for help locating this). Hold the button down for 20 seconds. Try this a few times.

Check your air filter. These should be changed regularly. If yours is dusty or dirty, replace it. You can pick up a new air filter inexpensively on Amazon or at stores like Walmart.

If these actions don’t fix your Goodman air handler problem, consider calling an HVAC technician.

Blower motor is not running

If your thermostat is set to “auto,” switch it to “on.” See if this starts the blower. If it does, set it back to “auto” and try adjusting the temperature up or down to see if that makes an impact. You may be able to pinpoint the issue to the thermostat this way.

If you suspect the problem is with the thermostat, clean it. Open the thermostat and dust its components with a soft cloth or canned air. Check around the house for drafts that could signal an air leak. If you find one, seal it. Make sure the vents in your home are open and unobstructed by decor, furniture, or clutter.

If you suspect the problem is with the blower itself, turn the power to the air handler off. Remove the cover and ensure there are no obstructions inside. Dust the components with a soft cloth or canned air.

You could get the blower working, but it may only operate for a short while. Call an HVAC technician to schedule a replacement before it gives out entirely.

Goodman air handler is short cycling

Check that your thermostat sensors are clean. Open the thermostat and dust the components with a soft cloth or canned air.

Look at the vents in your home. Ensure their louvers are open and furniture, draperies, and other items aren’t blocking them.

Try to identify air leaks in your home. Feel for a draft around windows and doors and seal them if you can.

Check your air ducts for leaks as well. If it’s been a while since your ducts were cleaned, consider hiring an air duct cleaning company.

If these Goodman air handler troubleshooting tips don’t help, call an HVAC technician. It’s possible your thermostat is miscalibrated or you have a refrigerant leak. These issues should be addressed by a pro.

Goodman error codes and documentation

Your Goodman air handler likely works in tandem with a Goodman heat pump. The heat pump features an LED light that communicates errors with a series of flashes. You can read our complete Goodman heat pump troubleshooting guide or check out Goodman’s error code tool for information on what these flashes may indicate.

If you plan to call a technician, do not power off the unit. When powered off, most systems will reset the codes until the problem happens again. When a technician is called out, they may not be able to resolve the issue because the code will likely reset if the system is powered off.
